PERMEX MASS FLOW FILLING SYSTEM FIRST TO WIN WEIGHTS AND MEASURES APPROVAL

ChemicalFood

A Permex "fill by 'weight' without weighing" system, which uses a mass flow meter to fill by the kilogram, is the first of its kind in the UK to be approved by the National Weights and Measures Laboratory.

Aware of the growing interest in Mass-filling technology, NWML, together with Fisher-Rosemount, the manufacturer of the Micro Motion Coriolis Mass Flow meter used in this pioneering machine, and Permex have all worked intensively on the design and documentation required for this new advance in filling technology. Permex is the first company to achieve the new standard.

NWML carried out a series of rigorous checks on both the design and performance of the Permex machine at their factory in Hoddesdon. The first certificate of its kind has now been issued for this machine.

The ground breaking Permex system is based on an all stainless steel Permex Panda unit with the top-fill filling head mounted on a pantographic arm to give the operator maximum reach and mobility. As the customer for this machine is filling lubricating oil, Carbon steel is used for all liquid lines, pipes and valves while the hose is of a specially formulated long-life rubber. Heart of the system is a Fisher Rosemount's Micro Motion D150 Mass Flow sensor and Altus batch controller which accurately stops product flow when the pre-set quantity has been dispensed.

Special interlocks provide safeguards - shutting down the system if the product becomes aerated or the filling rate is outside the pre-set min/max band.

Distinct Advantages

Permex pioneered the concept of MassFill systems - using a mass flow meter to replace the normal volumetric type and measuring directly by mass rather than volume or weight. Filling by the kilogram in this way offers a number of distinct advantages.

There is no need to weigh empty containers or to worry about "in-flight" material i.e. product already beyond the valves but not yet weighed. Work can be carried out on a pallet full of containers while one is being filled.

The system is inherently flexible with conveyor, or free-standing container filling being possible as well as on-pallet applications.

Because the system does not measure by weight, fume extract heads can be close coupled to the container to meet relevant safety requirements without affecting the accuracy.

Accuracy is normally greater than with volumetric systems over a range of small to large containers since the MassFill system is inherently temperature compensated.

The MassFill approach also offers greater versatility than gravimetric systems in handling a variety of material densities and container sizes.

All these benefits are accompanied by an increase in productivity - operators can cap filled containers while the filling of the next is taking place and there is no need for production to halt while the weighscale is in use - there is no weighscale!
