The liquid handling division of Permex Limited has successfully completed another major export order for the rapidly developing Chinese market.

Working in association with trading partners GEI FCL of Ashford, Kent, Permex supplied filling systems which will form part of a complete oil packaging facility for the Shell Tianjin Company Limited of China.

Permex's design, development and manufacturing tasks centred on three separate production units.

The first involved a gravimetric filler capable of handling IBC's or 4 x 205 litre drums " on pallet". This comprised a gravity roller conveyer complete with braking rollers and stops together with weigh-filling and bunging and oversealing positions. Drums/IBCs are delivered to the weigh-filling position for filling via a Permex heavy duty Jumbo arm with top filling nozzle. Permex also integrated into the design the weigh platform, pneumatic bunging and oversealing tools and the final section for removal of the filled containers by forklift truck.

A second gravimetric filler was required for handling 15 litre - 25 litre pails and jerricans. The Permex solution comprised a power assisted gravity rollered conveyer, delivering single containers to a Permex Gazelle gravimetric filler. The company also designed into the system a position for lid pressing, or screw capping - depending on which style of container is to be filled, and ink jet printer for batch coding and a vacuum lift palletiser.

The third production unit for the Chinese plant involved a totally different type of assembly. This system is designed to fill 1 kg (and occasionally 10 kg) tins with grease and comprises a drum-following pneumatic ram with reciprocating pneumatic pump mounted on the drum follower; an oval-gear flow meter with pulsed output to a Permex MicroBatch Plus batch controller, which controls dispensing of grease from a filling nozzle dipping to the bottom of the tin and finally a hand lid press.

The three complete systems were assembled at the Permex factory for demonstration to personnel from both STLC and Shell International. After passing this critical inspection, the systems were dismantled export packed and air freighted to China to meet the tight delivery schedule required.

Subsequently the systems have been installed commissioned and factory acceptance tests have been completed to the full satisfaction of a customer over 3,500 miles away from Permex's Hertfordshire base.
