As with most computer programs Oilwatch keeps its important data in files on the hard drive. Oilwatch installs in C:\Oilwatch by default but if it was installed anywhere else you just need to modify these instructions accordingly.

There are four files that contain the system settings which are:

c:\oilwatch\wow_set.dat

c:\oilwatch\wow_cfg.dat

c:\oilwatch\wow_tot.dat

c:\oilwatch\wow_aud.dat

There are two files that hold the transaction records which are:

c:\oilwatch\oilwatch.db

c:\oilwatch\oilwatch.px

There are two files that hold the validation codes which are:

c:\oilwatch\validation.db

c:\oilwatch\validation.px

All these should be backed up on a regular basis, preferably daily, to minimise data loss should anything happen to the computer. Most versions of windows come with a backup utility which is perfect for this function but simply copying the files somewhere safe using Windows Explorer will work just as well.
