Upgrading Oilwatch Keypads

1.Installing support for the USB/Serial port adapter

Only use the USB adapter if the computer does not have a real serial port. Unpack the USB adapter and put its CD in the computer, it should auto-run. Follow the instructions on the USB adapters packing card. When the installation is complete make a note of the COM port number assigned to the adapter using Windows device manager. Right click on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties' from the pop up menu. Select the 'Hardware' tab. Click on the 'Device Manager' button. Expand the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' item. Note port number from the entry titled 'USB Serial Port (COM?)'.Close the 'System Properties' window.

2.Installing the Keypad upgrade software

Place the 'Oilwatch Keypad Upgrade' CD in the computer, it should auto-run. Follow the on-screen instructions using default options. When the installation is complete a picture should appear showing the correct orientation for the programming cable, if possible print out a copy of this for use on site.

3.Installing the 'Compact Configuration' software

Place the 'Compact Configuration' CD in the computer, it should auto-run. Follow the on-screen instructions using default options.

4.Running the Keypad upgrade software for the first time.

Run the RFU utility whose icon should be on the desktop..Click on 'Setup' then 'Communications...' on the menu to open the 'Communications Options' window. Click on 'Use Serial Connection' to make sure a serial port is used. Make sure 'Enable Processor Detection' is checked. If using the USB adapter make sure 'Use USB to serial converter' is checked. The 'Baud Rate' should be 115200.The 'Comm Port' should be changed to match either the real serial port or that created by the USB adapter and noted in step 1.Click on the 'OK' button to save the changes and close the 'Communications Options' window.

5.Backing up the Compact Configuration

Switch off the 24v supply. Locate the configuration cable which is the simple ribbon cable without the red sleeving. Connect one end of configuration cable to the keypad using the connector on the 'Driver Board' which is located to the left of the text 'Driver Board'. Connect the other end to either the USB adapter or the real serial port as appropriate. Unplug the green 'AUX.'connector if there is anything connected to it. Switch on the 24v supply again and push the reset button to trigger the installer menu. Enter the installers password code 'P','E','R','M','E','X' (actually 626528) then 'Enter'. Press the right arrow to make the display show 'REMOTE CONFIG'. Press 'Enter' to make the display show 'TRANSFER DATA'. Press 'Enter' to make the display show 'IDLE'. Run the 'Configuration Wizard' utility. Select 'Read configuration from a keypad' then click on 'Next'. Select 'Configuration' and 'Operators' from the 'Data Selection' group box. Select 'Barcodes' from the 'Data Selection' group box if using a barcode scanner. Choose the appropriate serial port from the drop down box at the bottom left. Click on 'Start' and wait for the transfer to complete. Repeatedly click on 'Next' until reaching the final page of the 'Configuration Wizard'. Click on 'Save the configuration to file' and choose a suitable filename for the data. If hard copy is required click on 'View configuration report' and print the data from the viewer program (usually Internet Explorer).

6.Upgrading a keypad

Connect 24v supply to the keypad to make sure it is working. Switch off the 24v supply. Locate the programming cable, the one with a red piece of heat shrink near one end. Carefully connect the programming cable to the 10 pin connector on the daughter board attached to the 'Controller Board' (the one inside the lid) using the supplied picture as a guide. Connect the other end of the programming cable to either the PC serial port or the USB adapter as appropriate.Switch on the 24v again and the display should show a line of black bars indicating that the programming cable is connected. Run the RFU utility whose icon should be on the desktop. Click on 'File' on the menu and select a file from the recent files list. The firmware for stand alone keypads (Oilwatch Compact) have 'OilwatchCompact' in their filenames whereas the 'PC Oilwatch' firmware have 'OilwatchKeypad' in their filenames. The download will now begin automatically and its progress will be displayed on screen (an error will be generated if the programming cable is not connected properly). When the programming is complete :Switch off the 24v supply.Disconnect the programming cable from the keypad.Switch on the 24v supply again.Check the displayed version number is correct.Close the RFU utility.
